This Tree is Our Friend

I spent a semester documenting my favorite tree in Providence, RI, a Beech Tree in Prospect Terrace Park. For two months, I left a note box, index cards, and a pen hanging from a branch of the tree. I asked visitors to write memories they had at the park, connections to this tree, or thoughts about tree carving. In 2 months, I received 172 notes. I would check the box every morning. A place I considered “my tree”, my sanctuary expanded to include the stories I read. I’m thankful for everyone who shared memories or wished “whoever is reading this” well.
